The notification also includes Depot Material Superintendent under the Stores department. The detailed distribution of vacancies by category, including UR, SC, ST, OBC and EWS, is provided in Annexure B.
RRB JE 2026 Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility is one of the most important aspects of the recruitment. Candidates must possess the prescribed educational or technical qualification on or before the closing date of the application.
The notification clearly states that candidates who are waiting for the final results of their prescribed educational or technical qualification are not eligible to apply. Candidates must already possess the required qualification by the application closing date.
For different Junior Engineer posts, the required qualification generally involves a relevant engineering diploma or an accepted higher qualification, depending on the post.
For example, the post parameters in Annexure A specify relevant three-year Diploma qualifications for various engineering posts. For the Depot Material Superintendent post, the prescribed qualification is a three-year Diploma in Engineering in any discipline from a recognized University/Institution, while higher qualifications such as B.E./B.Tech are accepted in lieu of the diploma as specified in the notification.
Therefore, candidates should not assume that one qualification applies to every post. The post-wise educational qualification in Annexure A should be checked before selecting posts.
RRB JE 2026 Age Limit
The prescribed age range is 18 to 33 years as on 01 January 2027, subject to the applicable age-relaxation provisions mentioned in the notification.
Candidates belonging to eligible reserved categories may receive age relaxation according to the applicable rules. Candidates claiming reservation or relaxation benefits must possess the required certificates in the prescribed format.
The notification also states that the crucial date for claims relating to SC/ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, EBC and other applicable benefits, wherever not otherwise specified, is the closing date for online applications.
RRB JE 2026 Exam Pattern
The selection process includes two stages of Computer Based Tests, followed by the subsequent recruitment stages as prescribed in the notification
CBT 1 Exam Pattern
The first-stage CBT is common to the notified posts and is primarily a screening examination.
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 30 | 30 |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 25 | 25 |
| General Awareness | 15 | 15 |
| General Science | 30 | 30 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
The duration is 90 minutes, while candidates eligible to use a scribe receive 120 minutes. The first-stage examination has objective-type multiple-choice questions.
There is negative marking of one-third of the marks allotted to a question for every incorrect answer. The minimum qualifying percentages are 40% for UR and EWS candidates, 30% for OBC-NCL and SC candidates, and 25% for ST candidates, subject to the provisions mentioned in the notification.
CBT 2 Exam Pattern
The second-stage CBT is more focused on technical knowledge and contains 150 questions for 150 marks.
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Awareness | 15 | 15 |
| Physics & Chemistry | 15 | 15 |
| Basics of Computers & Applications | 10 | 10 |
| Environment & Pollution Control | 10 | 10 |
| Technical Abilities | 100 | 100 |
| Total | 150 | 150 |
The examination duration is 120 minutes. Technical Abilities carries the highest weightage, with 100 questions and 100 marks, making technical preparation particularly important for engineering candidates.
RRB JE 2026 Syllabus
The CBT 1 syllabus covers Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and General Science.
Mathematics includes topics such as number systems, BODMAS, decimals, fractions, LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentages, mensuration, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, age calculations, calendars, clocks and pipes and cisterns.
The reasoning section includes analogy, series, coding-decoding, mathematical operations, relationships, syllogism, Venn diagrams, data interpretation, analytical reasoning, classification, directions, statements, arguments and assumptions.
For General Science, candidates should prepare Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences up to the 10th Standard CBSE level.
For CBT 2, General Awareness includes current affairs, Indian geography, culture and history, freedom struggle, Indian polity and Constitution, Indian economy, environmental issues, sports, and scientific and technological developments. Physics and Chemistry are based on the level specified in the notification.
The technical syllabus is divided into the relevant engineering groups. Detailed syllabi for Civil & Allied, Electrical & Allied, Electronics & Allied and Mechanical & Allied Engineering are provided in Annexure VIII.
RRB JE 2026 Application Process
The online application process begins on 14 August 2026, and candidates can submit applications until 13 September 2026 at 11:59 PM. The examination fee payment deadline is 15 September 2026.
Candidates must first create an account through the link provided on the official RRB website. Those who have already created an account for earlier RRB CENs should use their existing credentials.
A valid personal mobile number and active email ID are required for OTP-based account creation. Importantly, details entered during account creation, including the mobile number and email ID, cannot be changed later.
Candidates are advised to authenticate their identity through Aadhaar or DigiLocker, as recommended in the notification.
Important Application Rules
One of the most important instructions in the RRB JE 2026 recruitment is that a candidate must choose only one RRB. Candidates can indicate their preferences for the Railway Zones and posts/categories available under their chosen RRB. Once the options are exercised, they are treated as final.
Submitting multiple applications to different RRBs or even multiple applications to the same RRB can result in rejection of all applications and may lead to debarment from future RRB/RRC examinations.
Candidates should therefore carefully check their eligibility, preferred posts, RRB choice and category details before submitting the application.
RRB JE 2026 Application Modification Window
Candidates who need to modify permitted details after submission can use the modification window from 16 September to 25 September 2026 by paying the prescribed modification fee.
The modification fee is ₹250 per occasion and is non-refundable. However, details entered during account creation and the chosen RRB cannot be modified.
This makes it particularly important to enter personal information correctly while creating the account.
Medical Standards and Document Verification
Medical fitness is another important component of the recruitment. Different posts have different medical standards, such as A-3, B-1, B-2 and C-1. Candidates should check the medical standard applicable to the particular post they want to select.
The notification specifically states that candidates found medically unsuitable for their opted posts will not be given an alternative appointment.
Candidates will also be required to produce original documents supporting their educational qualifications, age, caste/category and other claims during Document Verification.
How to Prepare for RRB JE 2026
Candidates preparing for the RRB JE 2026 exam should adopt a balanced strategy covering both general and technical subjects.
For CBT 1, focus on building speed and accuracy in Mathematics and Reasoning while regularly revising General Awareness and General Science. Since one-third negative marking applies, candidates should avoid excessive guessing.
For CBT 2, technical preparation should receive the highest priority because 100 out of 150 questions are from Technical Abilities. Candidates should first identify their applicable engineering group and follow the syllabus given in Annexure VIII.
A practical preparation strategy is:
- Understand the complete syllabus
- Divide technical subjects into manageable topics.
- Revise engineering concepts regularly.
- Practice objective questions.
- Take timed mock tests.
- Analyse incorrect answers.
- Revise General Awareness and current affairs consistently.
- Practise CBT 1 topics for speed and accuracy.
- Avoid blind guessing because of negative marking.
- Keep documents and certificates ready well before the application deadline.
The RRB JE 2026 recruitment is a significant opportunity for eligible engineering diploma and degree candidates seeking a career with Indian Railways. With 3,993 vacancies, Level 6 pay and an initial salary of ₹35,400, the recruitment can attract a large number of applicants.
Candidates should not wait until the last date to apply. Before completing the application, carefully verify the post-wise educational qualification, age eligibility, medical standard, RRB preference and vacancy details. The application window is open from 14 August to 13 September 2026, while the fee payment deadline is 15 September 2026.
Most importantly, candidates should remember that the RRB JE 2026 exam requires preparation for both general subjects and technical abilities. A focused study plan, regular practice, mock tests and careful revision can help candidates prepare effectively for the two-stage CBT process.
